Helping animals have no boundaries

Yesterday, we published our Tri-Paws (click link here) at Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Shelter (NANAS) and shared how happy they have adapted. This morning we received a few messages and emails from both Singaporeans and Malaysians asking if we could help a disabled dog in distress located at a car park near AEON Bukit Indah. Many wrote in because they were worried for the dog's welfare and the “Street is not his home” and it was not a place for a disabled dog.

Sharon and Chia Hwei, Noah’s Ark Angels went to Bukit Indah to check on the dog. They managed to locate the dog and brought it to the sanctuary for immediate medical aid. After some observation and a physical examination, conclusively it was an old injury that he sustained much earlier had led to the paresis of his hind limbs and calcification of his fractured legs the trauma has led to this condition. He is neutered and looking at his condition we can conclude that he was cared for and dumped for some reasons which is hard of an animal lover to comprehend.

We noticed that this is quite common for dogs or cats to get dumped on the streets by their owners when the pet meets with a car accident. Owners refused to send the pet to the vet for treatment for obvious reasons – they conveniently dump the pet and let it wait for a slow death, while the pet has to look for food or get attacked by feral dogs.

We have met owners with accident victims before, when we asked, “How did your dog meet with an accident?”. Their reply is: “Oh, I let my dog out of the house to pee and to go for a walk on its own.” This is the ONE of the most common reply.

Plight of a street dog in Johor - the street is not their home

17 March, this lonely street dog was brought in to Noah's Ark Animal Birth Control Clinic this afternoon by a caregiver from Taman Gaya in Johor.

A physical examination was done on him.

Breed: Cross Great Dane
Age:    est. 6 years old
Color:  Black

From his condition, he has been leaving on the street for a long time.  He is a very friendly dog and he was very cooperative during his physical examination procedures.

He has a myriad of medical problems, namely:

1. Transmissible veneral tumour (TVT) 

2. Heartworm positive
3. High liver enzyme
4. Fractured mandible which could be from an old accident
5. Lacerated leg wound from a recent accident

Gaya will be treated in stages and eventually he will be a permanent resident of the sanctuary.

Another happy ending for this lucky dog, he received shelter because you cared for him.

Rocky a Neapolitan Mastiff given up by his owner.

Top 5 Reasons by Owners Give Up Their Pets:

• It is no longer fashionable
• The pet is old
• Unwilling to pay for vet fees
• Downgrading to a smaller house/apartment

Rocky, a 10 year old Neapolitan Mastiff was given up today because he is old and smelly. Moreover his owner does not want to pay for his surgery fees to remove several lumps on his body and an aural haematoma.

Dr Jessica Kuek, a vet from Amber Veterinary Clinic attended to Rocky and did a physical examination on him and found him to be fit to undergo surgery to remove the lumps and drain the swelling in his ear flap.

Jessica will be at Noah's Ark for a week to volunteer her services for the sanctuary animals.

Dumped and Left to Die

This dog was found dumped outside Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary (NANAS).
Workers at the sanctuary immediately took the dog in to clean its wounds
which were already infested with maggots. 

It was a typical Sunday afternoon at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary (NANAS) when the workers were alerted to a mongrel that was dumped just outside the sanctuary.  

Immediately, the workers rushed to the dog’s aid and brought it in to seek medical treatment.

The prognosis was bad, maggots were already devouring and infecting the dog’s wound. There was only one option - which was to remove the maggots individually before treating the wound. The reality was that 100 maggots were able to eat through about ½ a pound of flesh. If left untreated, the dog would suffer a slow and painful death.

The main problem lies with the owner not knowing or being ignorant of the meaning of responsible pet ownership. Being responsible means going through the right channels to surrender your pet.  

Animal sanctuaries such as Noah's Ark and organizations such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)  seek the public co-operation to use the right channels to safely surrender your pet if need be. 

The sad outcome of these dogs is that they lose their sense of direction. Often they yearn for their owners, are susceptible to further abuse and attacks by other strays. Surrendering of your pet should be done as the last resort and always seek the right help for your pet. Medical treatment and financial assistance plans are available, thus there should be no reason for the dumping of pets.

Bruno, estimate to be about 3 years old is on the road to recovery. He also has a permanent place to call home.  Practice animal responsibility and never dump your pet. There are always alternatives available and a pet is a life-long commitment.

Lordy: "I was dumped and left to die on the streets."

A passerby spotted a young German Shepherd lying in the bushes motionless - concerned for the dog's wellbeing he contacted Noah's Ark for assistance.

barely moved.

Tye, our volunteer went to the site to check and found the dog to be in a sorry state.  Why would an owner dumped his dog on the streets?  

Most probably the owner thought that a kind soul would pick the dog up or either to let his dog die slowly on the streets from heat stroke.  The dog could have walked and dragged his hind leg for some distance till it was dehydrated from the heat.  

If the passerby did not contact Noah's Ark - it would have been a slow death for the dog.

When the dog arrived at Noah's Ark - you could feel the sadness asking if it was going to die?  Sometimes, we have to make a tough decision on the fate of a rescued dog or cat - if there is no quality of life, euthanasia is the most humane to end an animal's suffering.

When Lordy was brought into the clinic for Raymund to check - we discovered that he had hip dysplasia and he was not able to bend his left hind leg.  Raymund felt that was caused by neglect by its owner.

Another sad thing about Lordy was that his front left paw was fractured, how did this poor boy fractured his front leg? With his hind leg dislocated and a fractured front paw - we know that life will not be normal for him - how is he going to move around?

Raymund carried Lordy down from the table to observe his mobility. Lordy had to drag his left hind leg around. Raymund also mentioned that the leg had to be amputated and his main worry is that how is Lordy going to move around when the leg is amputated? The vet needs to decide what is the best way to solve this in order for Lordy to be mobile.

We know that Lordy wants to live and it's not time for him to go, we have decided to let him recuperate and build his immune system before making the decision which leg to be removed.

While Lordy was in the clinic, he followed Raymund and licked his face to say "Thank you for caring and for giving me hope".  Animals are amazing and they know how to show gratitude.

Within a week, Lordy settled in and all he wants to do is to play with his friends.  He has gained confidence and he is a happy camper.

The volunteer vets from Singapore will be visiting him soon to operate on his leg.

We are also thankful that Lordy found himself a God Ma June to sponsor his stay at Noah's Ark and he is looking forward to meeting her soon so that he can give her a lick to say "Thank you".

What are the right channels to surrender a pet?

Numerous cats and dogs are unceremoniously and illegally abandoned by owners who view their pets are disposable commodities once their allure wears off. 

Owners who cite one reason or another often want to get rid of their pet but do not know the proper channels of surrendering of their pets.

The reality is that due to their owner’s hasty decisions, they are starting a ‘snowball’ effect which subjects their pets to dire consequences of letting them fend on their own and away from their normal routine. Their behaviors might be altered due to the traumatic experiences they face such as being more wary of humans. Their overall health will worsen due to prolong exposure to the harsh environment and they may even die in the end.

Their wounds take months to heal and complications 

could arise if left untreated such as deadly infections.

Thus most pets are in bad conditions by the time kind-hearted members of the public or animal welfare groups (AWGs) render their assistance to take them off their streets. Mr Raymund Wee, Founder of Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary (NANAS) said: “It is more humane to surrender it first and properly to shelters or AWGs.”  Adding on he said: “Sometimes, the animals come to us in conditions where euthanasia is needed as their quality of life has been greatly compromised.”

Some of the challenges that Raymund encounter in cases of irresponsible abandonment are that these animals are too wary of humans and great efforts are needed to catch them to bring them in for immediate treatment. At times, these animals are abandoned outside the sanctuary. Raymund questions, if these people can transport their pets to the sanctuary, why can’t they surrender them properly to us?

These animals were euthanized in a humane way as there were too many animals being abandoned or surrendered by their owners. It is a tough decision to euthanize these animals but the fault lies with humans who are not responsible enough to sterilize them. Education in enforcing the neutering of pets is important to prevent them from having more litters which will add to the increase of the stray population when they become unwanted.

that are serious due to accidents or abuse sustained 

while they were homeless.  

It is always a tough decision to put them down 

as they are in pain from their injuries.

With the stray population increasing in numbers, the local town councils are forced to round up these strays to be culled due to complaints by members of the public.  It is a sad reality that begins with the owner’s mindset of not doing anything to help the situation. Noah's Ark strive to make people aware of the right channels in surrendering of pets so that more innocent lives can be spared.

German Shepherd abandoned by her owner

Sanctuary News

This German Shepherd dog, was straying aimlessly around Johor Jaya.

Fearing for her safety, a good Samaritan brought her to Noah's Ark ABC Clinic two weeks ago for treatment. The sanctuary vet did a physical examination on her and she was infested with fleas and ticks. She also had maggot wounds on many parts of her body.

She had an ulcerated growth on her right jaw that was bleeding badly. 

Today our vet did a surgery on her to removed the lump.

We named her Sheba, when you visit the sanctuary, remember to stop by to say "Hi" to her.

The hurt in me by Topaz

One morning, my ex owner brought me to the vet because of the open wounds on my body and I was loosing weight.

The vet suggested that I should be hospitalised for observation and the nurse told my ex owner that a deposit should be placed. My ex owner said that he was rushing off to work and he will get his wife to come down to place a deposit.

Guess what? Both of them never showed up and left me at the vet. Typical irresponsible heartless owners.

I started becoming destructive, throwing my tantrums and banging against the cage - can you feel the anger in me?

The vet could not take the noise and my behaviour that he called Uncle Raymund if Noah's Ark could take me in?

After some thoughts - Uncle Raymund arranged for a volunteer to discharge me from the clinic and brought me to Noah's Ark.

Uncle Raymund examined me, and found me to be in a poor state of health. One of my eye is going blind, I had a huge open wound near my tail and out off frustration sometimes I would bite my wound to make it worst.

During the day, I am well behaved, I am co operative with the workers when I had to take my medication and have my wounds cleaned.

But in the middle of the night, I drove Uncle Raymund nuts. Out off frustration, I will destroy my metal bowls and bark through the night. By the way - I have destroyed several mental bowls already for a dog of my size - now they serve my food and water in a heavy porcelain bowl - there is no way that I could carry it around nor destroy it.

I hated my life with my ex owner - life was meaningless, I was locked up day and night. All I want now is to be able to have freedom and I want to walk on the grass.

Message from the caregiver:
Topaz is currently receiving medical treatment for his wounds which will take time to heal and we need to boost his immune system up. He is doing well and putting on weight which is a good sign.

Topaz had so much anger in him - can we blame him? No. It is not his fault - the fault is on the human being. Is this the way to treat Man's Best Friend?

Thank goodness for a dog with a temper - he had never once showed us any aggression and he has been very nice towards us.

Topaz is not a young dog - he is estimated to be about 8 years old.

I have the looks. I don’t have the qualities to be a show dog

I lost the use of my right hind leg from a car accident when I was less than a year old.

My ex owner brought me to the vet, left me at the clinic and never came back for me after they found out the cost, it was too expensive to amputate my leg.

I really can't understand why my ex owners are so mean to abandon me at the vet and they were not willing to spend and to provide medical aid when I needed it most.

Wasn't I part of your family? You said I was cute when you had me and when you played with me.

Just because I am no longer a perfect dog with four legs you don't want me anymore?

What if it had happened to your friends or family member? Yes, I know - I am just a dog.

To you, I am nothing - a young puppy with no feelings and no emotions. I am at your disposable at your convenience anytime when you don't want me and you can conveniently throw me out off your life!

Dr Edwin knows that I am a young dog and I have so much to live for, he could not bear to euthanize me when my ex owners didn’t want me anymore. Dr Edwin called Uncle Raymund to check if Noah's Ark could accommodate my stay at the sanctuary.

Uncle Raymund heard about me and he agreed to give me that second chance to live again.

I was also very lucky, two volunteer vets from Singapore went to Noah's Ark Clinic to perform the surgery on my hind leg. I had my right leg amputated and I rested for a few days and in no time, I was up and running at Noah's Ark with my friends.

Rosie: "What have I done wrong to deserve this treatment?"

On 18 March 2013, Rosie was abandoned in Johor, Malaysia with an open wound under her arm which could fit a golf ball and another wound on her elbow. In order for the wounds to heal, the vet had to stitch it.

How did this happen to her? A small cut that became a big hole which was left untreated for days?  Could you feel the pain that she had to endure for so many days?  

What happened if it was you? What would you have done? Seek medical treatment off course.  But for a dog, the convenient way is to dispose it on the streets waiting for a kind soul to pick her up or either a slow death. 

People are treating dogs like garbage, when they are God’s creatures great and small - they should be treated with respect. 

When Rosie arrived at Noah’s Ark clinic, looking at her eyes, you could feel the pain and sadness in her.

In her mind, she wonders “What have I done wrong to deserve this? Why did my owner throw me out off the house? Why me? When you had me, you found me cute and adorable, now you don’t want me anymore? Why? Tell me why?”

You could see in Rosie’s eyes that she has given up hope filled with hurt and sadness  – but there is hope at Noah’s Ark.  We are here to change that emotion on her and we want to see a happy dog again. We estimate Rosie to be about 3 years old.

 Rosie is currently receiving medical treatment at our clinic.  Noah’s Ark has an equipped clinic that provides medical care for the many animals at the sanctuary.

We also provide low cost sterilization in Singapore, Johor and Muar for street cats and dogs, each month we sterilized close to 120 animals. Sterilization is the only solution to prevent unwanted kittens and puppies from entering into this world.

Big Ben's Story

 

Hi! Its me, Big Ben.

I wanted to show you some photos of me when I first arrived at Noah's Ark.

Top left: See how miserable my face was, I was in so much pain and it was so difficult for me to pee - until Uncle Raymund found out that I was peeing blood. And the following day, Uncle Raymund took me to the vet to be examined and discovered that I had stones in my bladder and an operation was scheduled as soon as possible to have it removed.

Top right: That's me at a foster's house. The first day when someone found me at the car park under the hot sun. You can never imagine how someone so cruel and could do that to me right? Its so common among pet owners to give up their pets when it fall sick. Its cheaper to get another NEW dog than to provide medical care for an OLD dog that brought joy and was part of the family.

Bottom right: The picture was taken during my surgery. The vets were stunned to find so many stones in me. In the operating room, I could hear one stone after another stone piling up. Now you understand the discomfort I was going through all these months with my previous owner.

I recovered well and the caregivers at Noah's Ark have been taking good care of me at the clinic.

I am slowly gaining weight and soon I will look like a model for Hush Puppies :)

Bassett Hound abanoned at a carpark

Hi, my name is Big Ben.

I recovered under the care of my caregiver, Raymund, and I am thankful he took me in and saved my life. Without him, I will not be running and playing with my friends at Noah's Ark.

I was abandoned at a car park in Malacca and my cruel owner expect me to find my way around. Just because she refused to have me treated for the stones in my bladder she conveniently dumped me on the streets.

I wonder how could she ever live with the guilt. Well, that's the past and we all have to move on. I was given a second chance and I am grateful for being alive today.
