News from Noah's Ark - November 2014

Dear Friends of Noah's Ark

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all our supporters for contributing towards "Noah's Ark Electricity Project" .

The total amount raised for the "Electricity Project " today stands at $16,600 - we havedefinitely achieved our target for the project. A big thank you once again, without your support this would not have been possible.

In the light of Christmas giving, we hope that you will also consider helping us further in our newest initiative "Buy A Brick" goal of S$12,000 for the following repair works that the sanctuary needs:

  • S$3,000 to build an enclosure for Jerry, a rescued 150 kg wild boar that had been bought by someone believing he was a Vietnamese pot bellied pig.
  • S$5,000 to repair and rebuild the enclosure for Starbucks and Latte, residents of Noah's Ark and Mocha a newly rescued macaque that was a hit and run accident victim. To read about Mocha's rescue, please click here.

  • Last and not least S$4,000 to repair the leaking roofs.

To further our commitment to reducing unnecessary killing and to a stray free Singapore and Malaysia, we have introduced our Animal Birth Control (ABC) clinic to provide low cost sterilization of stray animals. We are happy to report that our decision to promote cheaper sterilization has met with wide public support as evidenced by the growing number of veterinarians that now visit our sanctuary to assist us in our sterilization programmes.

This professional assistance is most welcomed as we now see an increasing number of animal rescue cases at the sanctuary almost on a daily basis. We have therefore formally named this venture  "VetHelp@Noah's Ark" . We hope to encourage  professional and student veterinarians to come forward to lend their time in helping with the clinic at the sanctuary on a voluntary basis with the introduction of this program.

To date, veterinarians from Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong that have participated in  the "VetHelp@Noah's Ark" programme have been given the opportunity to witness and participate on some less common cases such as limb amputation, removal of kidney stones, eye enucleation and early age neutering. Such complicated cases gives the volunteer veterinarians the opportunity to finally apply their knowledge and expertise on needy patients.

We are most appreciative of the sacrifice our dedicated and passionate veterinarians whohave sacrificed their rest days to make a difference to these animals. Our animals at the sanctuary have benefited greatly from their expertise and commitment of our volunteer vets. We look forward to the continued success of this initiative which is a definite win - win situation for all participants.

In addition, we are now launching our campaign  the "Street is Not Their Home"., A program that highlights how imperative it is that we need to work on neutering so as to reduce the stray street population and the  unnecessary killing. We hope that our programmes will garner support from more willing veterinarians so that we will eventually see a slow and steady decline in the stray population through our combined efforts.

I would also like to make special mention of both Ms Susanna Gan for donating S$1,000 and Mr Yong Sze Nam for donating S$5,000 who despite their recent bereavements decided that in honour of their loved ones' memories a monetary tribute  to Noah's Ark was made.

So as the spirit of Christmas and giving sets upon the world, we do hope that you will consider giving to our deserved progammes: "Buy a Brick", "Vet Help@Noah's Ark" or "Sponsor a Pet".

Any form of donations are always welcomed. If however you would prefer to donate cash, please send a cheque to Noah's Ark CARES and mail it to 42 Cairnhill Road #02-01 Singapore 229661 or make a fund transfer to support us.

Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) Cats

When one mentions Marina Barrage, Marina Financial Centre, Marina Coastal Expressway, Gardens By The Bay - what comes to our mind is a modern and developed Singapore. On this little red dot, a number of stray and community animals share the same space with us and sometimes, in the most unexpected places.

Sometime in October, our volunteer was alerted to an area with a number of unsterilized cats at a worker's dormitory off Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE).

We had previously spayed and rehomed some of the dogs around the same area too when we were asked to help the cats as well. We were informed that the dormitory will be demolished at the end of November'14. After finding out that the cats will be shelter-less soon, the volunteers made a decision that the cats should not be returned to the site after sterilization. It would be inhumane to return the cats back to the site as the dormitory is in the middle of many other construction sites - they may be knocked down by heavy vehicles and their source of food would be gone too.

Please help us to help the cats before they become shelter-less by helping to trap the cats, transport the cats to the vet for vaccination, micro chipping and boarding while we try to find homes for them. To read about their plight, click here.

For more information, email to Noah's Ark CARES.

Shasha's Broken Tail

The volunteers were on their usual rounds checking and feeding the dogs.  When they reached Shasha's factory, they noticed  that she had excessively licked her tail and the tail was infected and swollen.

They checked with the security guard and a few workers and no one knew what had happened. We believed it could be an industrial accident, it looked like a forklift went over her tail.
Concern for her well being, we took her to the vet to have her tail treated.  To read about her plight, please click here.

Wildlife Rescue at Noah's Ark

On 4 November, a long tail marque was found clinging on to his dead mother on a busy street.  Obviously both were hit and run motor accident victims.  Mocha was lucky to survive and he had sustained a broken hind leg.  The macaque was brought to the sanctuary clinic in the morning by a farmer for treatment.  To read about Mocha's rescue, please click here.

By purchasing an art product, you are encouraging an artist and supporting a great cause, plus getting unique art to boot!

Visit Meerkat Place and purchase as Christmas gifts.

The items sold will be matched by a generous donor to Noah's Ark CARES from now till Christmas day.  The proceeds will help us to feed the animals at the sanctuary.

Huggy Boy's Enclosure

We would like to thank our main sponsors Linda, Andrew, Darren and all our well wishes for contributing towards the construction of Huggy Boy's enclosure.

Huggy Boy is very happy with his new home.  When he was transferred into his enclosure, it took him 2 days to discover that he could swing and everyday he is getting plenty of exercise.

The enclosure was designed by Raymund Wee and the students from School of the Arts (SOTA) helped with the construction with our workers during their school vacation.

Please click here to view a video of Huggy Boy in his new enclosure.

Starbucks,Latte and Mocha (both rescued macaques) have a Christmas wishlist that is to have a similar enclosure.  Please email to Noah's Ark CARES if you can make their dreams come true.

News from Noah's Ark - October 2014

Dear Friends of Noah's Ark

In June 2000, Noah's Ark moved from Singapore to Malaysia due to the expiration of its land lease. The sanctuary has existed without a constant supply ofelectricity since it moved 14 years ago. To compensate for the lack of electrical power, the sanctuary has relied on a diesel- powered generator to provide the electricity to run the necessary equipment and facilities needed for the sanctuary. All other deemed unnecessary usage (like TVs, fridges, fans) are not provided for. This is to ensure that there is never any disruption to the livelihood of the animals in the sanctuary.

For 14 years, the sanctuary relied on a diesel-powered generator to provide electricity.
Most if not all the generated electricity is utilized for the clinic to perform necessary and vital surgery and for recuperation. Due to the high cost of diesel, we have always had to be mindful that we only run the clinic from 4.30 p.m. to 11 p.m.  After 11 p.m. there is no electricity supply.

One of our recent  and very promising programmes run at the sanctuary is Vet Help@ Noah's Ark. This on-going programme has attracted many veterinarian students and volunteers to practice shelter medicine and to hone their skills so that theycan be become better skilled veterinarians or technicians. The benefits to both the participants and the residents of the sanctuary are clear to see. Unfortunately without a constant supply of electricity, we are therefore only able to run the program in the late afternoon. We would love to be able see the clinic at the sanctuary to function at full capacity to handle the influx of veterinarians, both from overseas and Singapore so that the animal residents would be able to get even better veterinary care.

With this in mind, we have checked with the respective authorities and can now confirm that it will cost S$15,000 to bring in the cable for the electricity to Noah's Ark . To date, we have raised a total of S$7,000 for the project.  We are still facing a shortfall of S$8,000 to bring the electrical power. We therefore would like to appeal to our supporters if they would consider helping this project succeed.

Quarantine bay for dogs.
Apart from the need to have a constant supply of electricity, we recognize that we have done minimal maintenance of our sanctuary since its move 14 years ago. Practically all funds raised have always been channeled to feed the animals, sterilization projects and only for the most pressing repairs.

Yet it is obvious that with the many changes in resident animal population and the sheer number of animals, we are in dire need of some major repairs. We are therefore also launching "Buy a Brick" initiative to encourage sponsors and supporters to help defray the cost of these urgent and long overdue repairs.

If you would like to support either our "Electricity Project" or "Buy a Brick" initiative, please do consider issuing a cheque to Noah's Ark CARES and mail to 42 Cairnhill Road #02-01 Singapore 229661 or make a fund transfer to support us.  To support our work at the sanctuary, you may write to us at Noah's Ark.

Your kind generosity and support will go a long way to make the sanctuary a better place for the animals that now call it home.

Thank you.

Project Industrial Dogs -
Bailing of 6 dogs from AVA

The volunteers of Noah's Ark have been attending to several rescue cases in Singapore. In August, we bailed 6 dogs from AVA that were caught by dog catchers. We were extremely upset that these catchers had caught the already sterilized and friendly dogs. They had been called in to address vicious dogs issues and instead of which they decided to catch the friendly ones. So the main issue was not dealt with so the objectives by AVA were not achieved.

In one particular upsetting case,  one of the friendly dogs actually greeted the dog catcher and allowed him to pick it up not realizing that it was sealing its own doom!

The volunteers at Noah's Ark CARES have spent many years sterilizing the dogs living off the streets. We are aware that it is not possible to rehome every dog we encounter but we realize that the only humane way to reduce the number of dogs surviving in such a manner is to do active sterilization. By sterilising just one female dog - we are able to prevent an estimated 50 dogs from being born for the next 5 years.

We have managed to rehome 2 dogs and we have another 4 loving and friendly dogs that would love to be part of a family. So if you believe that you can give any of our dogs a home, we would only be too happy to hear from you. The email to write to is noahsarkcares@gmail.com.

Come and meet the dogs this weekend at the National Geographic Channel Free Pet Shop at Big Splash, East Coast.

Carmen needs your help

Volunteers have been feeding Carmen for years and one day they noticed an abnormal growth starting to appear near her right hind leg.  The volunteers got worried and tried all ways and means to catch her for medical treatment.

On 28 September, after 3.5 hours of tussling with her, they finally caught her and brought her to the vet. To contribute towards Carmen's medical aid, please email to Noah's Ark.

News from Noah's Ark - January 2014

Dear Friends of Noah's Ark,

On 31 January, we will be  galloping into the Year of the Horse but before we do that, we would like to thank you for being our loyal friend and faithful supporter of Noah's Ark. It is because of your belief in us that we are able to continue our work with the animals at the sanctuary.

Noah's Ark will be turning 19 this year and like everything and everyone, it is beginning to feel the ravages of age. Many of the original inhabitants that made the trek from Singapore have crossed over to Rainbow Bridge. But for every resident that leaves there is always another one waiting anxiously to take its place.

We, at the sanctuary, will always have our work cut out for us. Animals are continually being abandoned for various reasons - many, sadly frivolous.  The tasks and responsibilities that face Raymund, the workers and our volunteers are heavy and ongoing. Compared to the fulfillment of rescuing and rehoming, there is little glamour in maintaining the sanctuary. However if the sanctuary did not exist, where would our rescued animals go?

The sad truth is that after the initial euphoria of "rescuing an animal", the rescuer sometimes forgets that there is a lifetime of caring to be undertaken.  This is the unglamorous part - maintenance of the rescued pack at the sanctuary. Nevertheless, it is our commitment to each and every animal that comes to stay with us that we want it to live out its life in the manner it ought to be able to - surrounded with love and care.

We are always mindful that limited resources do not allow us to rescue every animal in need. Hence, we have worked very hard to establish our spay and neuter campaigns both in Singapore and Malaysia, to reduce the number of unwanted litters - the only humane way to rescue our animals from needless killing. We believe that this work has made a difference.

Nevertheless, for 2014, we would like very much to appeal to you to help us "Build Noah's Ark brick by brick" - many of the buildings are now more than 14 years old and are in need of repairs. All of our funds have always been channeled to feeding and caring for the animals and neutering our strays, with repair work at the sanctuary, relegated to the lowest priority.

The "Buy-a-Brick" campaign will be launched at $10 per brick, which we hope you will support.  With your generosity, we will be able to undertake some much needed repairs and rebuilding of Noah's Ark so that our sanctuary will always be the place that our animals can call home. For more details, please click here.

We thank you all once again in advance for your generous and heartfelt support - Noah's Ark exists because of all of you.

Best wishes,

Chew Gek Hiang
President

Noah's Ark Cares

Buy-a-Brick
For 13.5 years, we relied on the generator and diesel to provide electricity for the sanctuary.  Electricity is a luxury to many of us and sometimes we take it for granted that we are able to enjoy light and air-conditioning any time we want - not for Noah's Ark.  We have to plan and use our generator wisely when we need electricity.  Electricity is used only in the afternoon and evening when Raymund needs to operate the clinic to attend to our sick animals or for the vets to perform surgeries.

With the developments around our area and having to operate the ABC Clinic, it is time that we have electricity.  Its costs an estimate S$16,000 to bring in the power cables to Noah's Ark.

The "Buy-a-Brick" programme will also go towards the repair and painting at Noah's Ark - some of the kennel and cattery doors, handles have given way and its needs to be replaced due to wear and tear.

For $10 you can help to buy a brick to provide light for the animals.

It's a good getaway to escape from the city and to be with mother nature in the wilderness.

Volunteers Day: 8 March
For all those who had thought of volunteering at Noah's Ark Sanctuary but are unable to drive - this is our first ever "Volunteers Day"!

We will be organizing this at Noah's Ark Sanctuary on Saturday, 8 March.

What many people do not realize that the animals at the Sanctuary want most from us (after food and shelter) is to be touched and played with. This is our time to bond with them.

On this special day, these volunteers will get a chance to work with dogs, cats or horses whichever animal catches your fancy. Part of this bonding time would require you to groom the animals and spend time socializing with them.

All this will be briefed and discussed further at the sanctuary with a short orientation tour prior to the session. Our regular volunteers will be present so that they will be able to help or assist you if required,.

Priority will be given to volunteers who have visited Noah's Ark before and are used to working with animals.

For more details about the programme, please click here.

Happenings at the Ark

Vets Across the Border
January was a busy month at the ABC Clinic - we had vets from Singapore and vet interns from Australia attached to Noah's Ark and together they have sterilized close to 120 dogs and cats within 10 days.

Noah's Ark provides low cost sterilization for the community - the animals that are brought to the clinic must be street dogs or cats.  Our objective is to sterilized as many street dogs and cats to prevent unwanted kittens and puppies on the streets - because the street is not their home.

It is not possible to rescue or to bring everyone back home - it is important that that we practice Animal Birth Control.

Moses loves durians.
Moses the Macaque
After being with us for 8 months and Raymund nursed Moses back to health, we have returned Moses into the wild to be with his troop.

It is sad to see him go but we know in Moses' heart - he is internally grateful for the care given to him during his stay at Noah's Ark.  We would like to than Mona and her family for contributing towards Moses medical aid.
