Birthday Celebrations for Melody Our Oldest Resident Visitors from Singapore celebrated Melody's Catherine showing Melody her cake. 34th birthday on 25 February 2017 during the sanctuary tour.    She was presented with a cake made of hay with carrots that looked like candles on the top of the cake.  The other horses and dogs also joined in the celebrations while visitors took turns to take a photo with her.   While Melody was enjoying her cake, our volunteer, Josann treated the humans to an array of mouthwatering cakes she had made for this special occasion.   Some people commented that there was no "real" birthday cake that day so the following week, Josann baked a cake for Melody and everyone celebrated Melody's birthday one more time.  She was not complaining.  She deserved it!   Being the oldest and the dominant mare, Melody enjoys being the matriarch of the herd.  At 34 years of age, she is still fit and strong and does not take any nonsense from anyone.   Rescued in 1999 from Tang Dynasty when they closed, Melody made the journey across the Straits to her new home when the sanctuary relocated to Johor from Singapore in June 2000.    Happy Birthday Melody!  Let's hope you have many more years to come!  Next year, maybe durian cake for you?  She absolutely loves durians but that is another story!

New arrivals from Singapore Welcoming Ah Gal, Fei Zai, Mandy & Blackie On 7 March 2017, the sanctuary was abuzz with news that four dogs arrived from Singapore.  We are very glad that we are able to give these deserving dogs a place they can finally call their forever home.  Let's meet them and hear their stories.    The Valentine Couple:  Ah Gal & Fei Zai Ah Gal and Fei Zai were guard dogs looking after a factory in Singapore.  They worked very hard, day and night, to ensure that the premises were safe.  After 10 years of dedication and undying loyalty, their services were terminated.    Instead of being rewarded for their work, they ended up at AVA.  This did not bode well for these two senior dogs.  They most certainly did not deserve this fate.    Thank goodness they were saved and can now retire and live out the rest of their lives at the sanctuary.  They were rescued by a NANAS volunteer the day before Valentine's Day and she aptly named them the Valentine Couple.   Mandy Mandy has lived at a heavy vehicle park for the past 13 years ever since she was a puppy.  She also had a caregiver, a foreign worker who worked at the vehicle park.  He was very responsible and ensured that Mandy received her annual vaccinations and when she was sick, he would bring her to the vet.   Unfortunately, the worker's contract ended and he had to leave.  In the meantime, Mandy had an accident and injured her right hind leg needing a plate to hold her bones together. Her right front leg was also injured.   When we found out about her plight, we were happy to offer Mandy a place at the sanctuary.   We strongly believe that Mandy deserves a home and a place to retire with dignity.   Blackie  Blackie is 2 years old and a very large dog.  He used to be locked up in a cage for many hours.  No animal should be treated this way.   A dog this size needs plenty of exercise and the freedom to move around.   What is the point of having a dog and keeping it in a cage?  The owner most probably just wanted a guard dog to look after his factory.  Wait till it barks too much, it will be disposed off in a heartbeat.  You just cannot win, can you?   Luckily, the rescuer felt sorry for him and managed to free him from his misery.  When we heard about Blackie, we agreed to take him in.  He can now roam free and run around on the sanctuary grounds to his heart's content.  Another happy dog in the making!

Noah's Ark Natural Animal Shelter (NANAS) is no longer affiliated to Noah's Ark CARES

It has come to our attention that some of our donors are not aware thatNoah's Ark Natural Animal Shelter (NANAS) which runs the animal sanctuary in Johor, Malaysia is now a separate entity from Noah's Ark CARES in Singapore.

Both entities, their operations and fundraising initiatives, were separated in June 2016.

• A new entity, Noah's Ark Natural Animal Shelter (NANAS) in Singapore was formed on 27 July 2016 for the purpose ofcontinuing our rescue operations in Singapore as well as forraising funds for shelter operations in Malaysia.
• Noah's Ark CARES is solely based in Singapore.
• Noah's Ark CARES no longer funds the operations in Malaysia with effect from June 2016. 

A new bank account has been opened for NANAS Singapore.

We thank you for your continuing support of our work and for being there when we needed help in this critical transition period.  In the meantime, we wish to update you on our latest rescues from Singapore.

Meet Meowmi, a 10 year old cat who arrived in September 

She belonged to and was cared for by a maid but when her contract ended, she was sent home.  The employer also did not want to keep the cat and was going to put it to sleep. 

Fortunately, Andrew came to know about Meowmi's plight, tried all means to re-home her but failed as she can be quite a handful and difficult to handle.  Most people would also not adopt senior cats so chances of re-homing her was very slim.

At the last resort, Andrew turned to Noah's Ark (NANAS) for help.  We agreed to take the cat because we were satisfied that he had exhausted all means to help the animal.

Andrew has also taken responsibility to look after Meowmi for the rest of her life by sponsoring her stay at the sanctuary.  We applaud him for doing his utmost to ensure that Meowmi be given a second chance.

7 dogs just arrived from a shelter forced to shut down due to rental increase

In December 2015, Raymund Wee, our founder, offered assistance to a shelter in Singapore when he found out that it had to shut down due to operational cost.

The landlord had doubled the rent and refused to budge so the operator of the shelter accepted our offer of help.  She had also told us that she would do her best to re-home as many dogs as possible before her lease expired at the end of September.

Out of a total of 22 dogs, 15 dogs were re-homed.  The remaining 7 dogs were sent to Noah's Ark (NANAS).  These were the ones that were difficult to re-home, especially the black, black and tan and older dogs.

However, these 7 dogs are the lucky ones who are now given a second chance at the sanctuary.  They are very sociable and have happily settled in.  We are sure, that in no time, they will be free to play, roam and run around on the sanctuary grounds.

All expenses incurred were paid for by the shelter operator and her friends which included sterilisation, vaccination, health checks, transportation and documentation fees.

New from Noah's Ark - July 2015

Noah's Ark Rescue Please help us to help them    Dear Friends of Noah's Ark We had an influx of animals that needed our help in the last couple of weeks and our volunteers could barely cope.  Practically, we do know that we cannot save every single dog on the street, but if you happened to see a dog in front of you that is unwell - are you able able to walk away?  We could not do it. Whether it was a major or a minor injury, one more previous life is saved and we try our best.  All rescue cases require energy i.e. time, labour and finance.  Our dedicated volunteers have been attending to their stray charges diligently and Noah's Ark has been actively working and promoting TNRM (Trap-Neuter-Release-Management).  We need your help to help the animals:  to adopt to volunteer to foster  to fund the rescued animals medical aid Our team of volunteers have been working towards a goal of having less strays on our streets because the streets are not their homes. Noah's Ark Update   Nugget Recently we found a lump growing on Nugget's throat.  Under sedation, the vet managed to squeeze out the lump and to see soft tissue.  An ultrasound will be able to diagnose his condition, due to the high cost, we had to put it on hold. Nugget is currently on antibiotics and he will be going for his review soon.  To read Nugget's story, please click HERE. Di Di Di Di a puppy living at a factory was diagnosed with tick fever, Ehrlichia and we were advised by the vet that his blood count was very low that he needed a blood transfusion. We are very thankful to J-Boy's owner for coming forth to save Di Di's life. To read about Di Di's story, please clickHERE.   Ricky During our rounds when we were out looking for Ricky's neighbour Rain, we found him lying listlessly under a container truck. The worker  said that he has been like this for the past few days and it was getting worrying. Concern for Ricky's welfare, we took him to the vet. Blood tests and x-ray were done and nothing was detected. We left him at the vet for 2 nights for observation in case something was not right with his immune system and he was diagnosed for dehydration because of his multiple bite wounds on him. To read about Ricky's story, please click HERE.  Rain She has a tipped ear and we assumed she is sterilized since a tipped ear is an indication of being neutered for street dogs. But one night, when we saw her with a swollen vulva  our jaws dropped. The male dogs were also after her! Was she on heat?  The vet did a thorough vaginal examination and did not find any lump so TVT was ruled out.  A higher possibility was that the spaying was not properly performed and Rain has retained ovaries - that was the reason why she was on heat again. To read about Rain's story, please click HERE.   Thumper Thumper is an innocent young puppy who greets everyone wagging his thin long tail.  He can be carried, handled and he will not resist.  How could a sweet boy survive being a stray? One fateful evening, Thumper was attacked by a pack of five big dogs. What crime did he commit? He simply went up to a contractor whom he recognized to happily greet him. The attack was triggered by jealousy and pack instinct.  To read about Thumper's story, please click HERE. Teddy Teddy lives in a factory was brought to the vet because he fractured his hind leg from a fall. The fractured has caused Teddy great pain but somehow he was still affectionate towards the rescuers. The vet advised to insert a metal placed on his left hind leg and to let him have cage rest for 6 weeks. To read about Teddy's story, please click HERE. News from Noah's Ark - March 2015

Dear Friends of Noah's Ark Our sanctuary in Malaysia will turn 15 this year. Although it seems as if it was just yesterday, time has not been so kind to it and its many residents.  Many of them have crossed over to Rainbow Bridge taking a little part of us with them.  I know I can speak for many of us who are grateful to Raymund for having the vision to dream of a stray free Singapore as well as of building an animal sanctuary for abused, abandoned and stray animals to support that goal. It is very heartening to note that Singapore is moving towards that vision with respect to our stray cat population.  The decision to sterilize stray cats in Singapore so as to reduce the numbers culled has finally been reached by authorities.  Noah's Ark CARES's stand has always been that sterilization is the only humane way to reduce any stray population: previous efforts at stray sterilization have led to a 30% reduction in the number of stray cats collected last year by the authorities. We at Noah's Ark CARES sincerely hope that in time this decision will be extended to our stray dog population in Singapore.  The recent proliferation of animal welfare groups concerned about Singapore strays is evidence that there is growing public awareness that a more humane way to reduce the stray population is needed.  We hope that this plea will not remain ignored for much longer. Even whilst we applaud these tiny steps of progress, we know that the work for animal welfare is never done.  At Noah's Ark CARES we continue to work to maintain the sanctuary: that has in its short 15 years seen many upheavals.  At times it felt that we would not be able to survive the many crises, a few notable ones being the devastating floods in 2009, the financial crisis in 2007 which saw a sharp decline in financial support, the boundary issue which affected our clinic and several structures .  The challenges remain plenty and never ending.  Nevertheless we take courage from the trust our animals have in us and our many supporters.   Our animals know that we will never abandon them, that our promise to care for them till their last breath will not be broken. Similarly, our efforts to educate people about the joys of adoption and responsible pet ownership must continue earnestly.  For it is through creating greater awareness that we will heighten public consciousness.  Hopefully, there will come a time when the need for a sanctuary becomes redundant, when each animal finds a loving forever home. Till that time, we remain committed to running the sanctuary, knowing that it will continue to provide a home for the many abused and abandoned companion animals that we have taken upon ourselves to call family.  Noah's Ark Fund Raising Dinner To celebrate our 15th year in Pekan Nanas and 20 years in animal welfare we will be organzing a fund raising dinner on Friday, 3 July to enable Noah's Ark to continue at least another 20 years of its important and good work. We would like to believe that our vision of a stray free Singapore and Malaysia will be closer to a reality then and our objectives finally reached.
