The Stonor Dogs

Imagine living your entire life in an abandoned lot in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. Hot from the sun, wet from the downpour. Your sole purpose is to defend the land. That is how our Stonor dogs were brought to life, their sole purpose to be guard dogs. They would have starved if Mr Yap, a kind man and a caregiver hadn't acknowledged their existence many years ago.  Mr Yap showed them care, affection, and earned the dogs trust. He visited them daily and fed them with chicken feet from his bag of tricks inside the trunk of his car.

In the fall, the City Council realized the existence of the 10 dogs, primarily because of complaints that the "guard" dogs were barking and disturbing the residents at the condo next door. Mr Yap was given 30 days to relocate the dogs OR the dogs will be culled.

As the days passed, one of the dogs named Hank, as we fondly called him, passed away from rat poison which we found around the edges of the abandoned plot of land.  Mr Yap and I buried Hank and that was went we knew we had to find them a new home.

Noah's Ark was our saving grace since SPCA Selangor could not house the dogs while the shelter was under construction and we did not have enough time to rehome the dogs, but happily one dog did get adopted.

Together with Alison and Mr Yap, we worked with SPCA and DB KL to get the dogs sterilized, vaccinated in order to prepare them for their journey to Noah's Ark.

On 10 January, SPCA helped to transport 6 dogs from KL to Johor, it was tough for the the dogs to be in cages for the long road trip but it was worth every minute.  For once in their lives, the dogs will have a safe haven.  Rex, Thelma, Pen (Penelope), Shirley, Toby and Louise have settled into their new home and they will always be together as a pack.

Every day when Mr Yap and myself visit the abandoned plot to care for the remaining 3 dogs, we can't help it but to feel emotional because we missed being greeted by the dogs. With SPCA's support we will rehabilitate and socialize these dogs to be ready for adoption.

We are thankful that they are in safe hands at Noah's Ark without their support the dogs would have been killed.

A Collaboration between SPCA Selangor and Noah's Ark

The SPCA Selangor volunteers had been working hard to try and find homes for as many dogs and cats that they could, and the deadline was looming nearer before the building had to be pulled down.

Marianne, a volunteer with SPCA Selangor called Noah's Ark to ask if we could help to give some of the dogs a home at the sanctuary.

Raymund our Founder, knew that the volunteers at SPCA Selangor were doing their best to find as many homes as possible despite their tight deadline so he agreed to accept any of the  dogs with the following conditions: they had to be too difficult to rehome as they were deemed neither cute or young, in other words senior dogs that remained shy and wary of people.

In the months of July and August, SPCA Selangor made two trips to transport such dogs from Kuala Lumpur to Noah's Ark. Eighteen dogs have since arrived at the sanctuary and we are happy to say that they have settled in nicely. These are the 18 lucky dogs that call Noah's Ark their home.

This is just one of the examples of a collaboration between SPCA Selangor and Noah's Ark - both of these groups realize that it is important that we are able to work together for the interests of the animals.

We believe that we complement each other as SPCA Selangor's strength is in rehoming given their large network whilst Noah's Ark is able to provide the older animal a place to live out its life in dignity.

In recognition of Noah's Ark's support, SPCA Selangor annually, in turn sells Noah's Ark's calendars at their centre to support our work for the animals.

"We accepted the eighteen dogs from SPCA Selangor, in memory of Van Renterghem Marie Reve who was fondly known as Reve by her friends.  She was an inspirational person and a role model to all those who believed that one should always treat animals with respect.  Reve was a volunteer with SPCA Selangor for 13 years and a regular visitor to Noah's Ark.  Rain or shine she was always there for the animals at the shelter.  Reve, our angel, we know that you will always be watching over us  and our animals at the sanctuary." - Raymund Wee, Founder of Noah's Ark

How Wang Wang escaped death

Wang Wang, may even be described as the biggest ‘survivor’ of them all. For a long time, he suffered, tied to a tree where he was beaten by the rain and scorched by the sun. Wang-Wang also had severe injuries on his back – the result of a scalding three months earlier, as well as a deep cut caused by the metal chain tied tightly around its neck. These painful wounds were never attended to. Although his ex-owner was pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three days in jail and a fine of RM 200, she could well have been jailed for six months for this extreme cruelty.

Wang Wang was sent to the SPCA Selangor, afraid and confused, he bit a volunteer who’d unwittingly walked into his kennel. He probably mistook the volunteer for someone who would ill-treat him again. The biting incident would have sealed his fate if not for the compassion of his kennel supervisor who called Raymund and asked if he could be re-housed at Noah's Ark.

Wang Wang has been living at Noah's Ark since 2006, running freely and cheerfully with his pals.
